Katharina Boerkei, 6, of Apex gets acquainted with Arizona, a 12-year-old, half saddlebred horse at Pleasant Horse Farm in southern Durham. With her butterfly-covered helmet tied tightly to her head, Boerkei prepares to take her first -riding. "I love horses," she says while brushing the nose and back of Arizona's nose and back. She says one day she wants to ride horses in shows like the ones she's seen on television. According to farm owner Alice Markunas, horse-riding is the ultimate life sport that builds confidence in the minds of children. "It's kinda like golf," she said. "You can do it your whole life."

The column is a celebration of the struggles, triumphs and tears we experience as we travel from birth to death. Our goal was to document moments in time that might otherwise be missed; sometimes it's the tiniest incident in one's life that has the most profound effect. When on assignment for the column, we looked for that one photo that tells a whole story. Some are the result of a found moment we came across on our daily assignments or our daily existence. For others, we thought of a specific event, like a first haircut or last dance, and sought out a subject who might illustrate the idea.
