Allison Davis, 18, from Conway, NC, struggles to stay on top of the wave while learning to surf at Wrightsville Beach near Wilmington, NC. Allison and her boyfriend rented two surfboards and spent nearly eight hours learning the basics of balance and speed as they repeatedly piloted their fiberglass boards toward shore. As sunset turned to twilight, the pair dragged their water-soaked frames from the briny clutch of the Atlantic. Allison lifted her 20-plus pound surfboard out of the water and flashed a grin as she caught her breath, “It sure was fun," she said. "Until I did a nosedive into the sand!”

The column is a celebration of the struggles, triumphs and tears we experience as we travel from birth to death. Our goal was to document moments in time that might otherwise be missed; sometimes it's the tiniest incident in one's life that has the most profound effect. When on assignment for the column, we looked for that one photo that tells a whole story. Some are the result of a found moment we came across on our daily assignments or our daily existence. For others, we thought of a specific event, like a first haircut or last dance, and sought out a subject who might illustrate the idea.
