Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell hands out gift bags to inmates on Christmas Day at the county jail in Smithfield. Bizzell, his son Blake Bizzell, 17, and a handful of deputies and corrections officers delivered 206 Christmas bags containing apples and oranges donated by R&H Produce of Raleigh and chocolate bars and mints, which Bizzell purchased with his own money. 'A lot of people may think the sheriff is just a hard-liner who's tough on crime,' Bizzell says. 'I know it's got to be tough to be in jail on Christmas. All the people in there are not bad. Some made a mistake and it could be their first time in a jail house. Even though you're in my jail I still care about you. My heart's desire is that this will be a turning point for some people. ... If that's true, it's worth all the effort.'

The column is a celebration of the struggles, triumphs and tears we experience as we travel from birth to death. Our goal was to document moments in time that might otherwise be missed; sometimes it's the tiniest incident in one's life that has the most profound effect. When on assignment for the column, we looked for that one photo that tells a whole story. Some are the result of a found moment we came across on our daily assignments or our daily existence. For others, we thought of a specific event, like a first haircut or last dance, and sought out a subject who might illustrate the idea.
