Identical twins Waynekid Kam, left, and Wayneho Kam, prepare for the Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School graduation ceremony at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh. The Kams, both a 5.1 grade-point average, shared the traditional valedictory speech at the ceremony. Waynekid said that one of his challenges is 'to be different from Wayneho. ... [we try to] branch off into our own separate worlds, but instead we often find ourselves with quite the same interests.' Both plan to study chemistry and biology at Duke University. 'Waynekid and I are more than brothers. We are semicompetitors, friends and great companions,' Wayneho said.

Listen to Waynekid Kam and Wayneho Kam talk about being co-valedictorians.

The column is a celebration of the struggles, triumphs and tears we experience as we travel from birth to death. Our goal was to document moments in time that might otherwise be missed; sometimes it's the tiniest incident in one's life that has the most profound effect. When on assignment for the column, we looked for that one photo that tells a whole story. Some are the result of a found moment we came across on our daily assignments or our daily existence. For others, we thought of a specific event, like a first haircut or last dance, and sought out a subject who might illustrate the idea.
