| Adam Gardner, Wilson County delegate to the State 4-H Congress, carries a candle to form a circle of light surrounding the State Capitol with about 700 other delegates from across North Carolina. The candlelight ceremony was a celebration of 4-H's 100th anniversary this year. For Adam, the annual state congress in Raleigh is a chance to meet new people and learn. "I've gotten a lot of life skills from 4-H," he said. "It teaches public speaking, and leadership skills that help me become a better person". In addition to his school work and 4-H, Adam works on the family farm with his parents in rural Wilson county where they raise cattle, grow tobacco, cotton, soybeans, oats, wheat, corn and hay. "It's hard to get away from the farm this time of year; we're busing putting in tobacco, but I plan my summer around attending the State Congress." |
