Nintey-two year old Norma Kirkham soaks up the morning sunshine from the front porch of Brighton Gardens, an assisted living center on Duraleigh Road in Raleigh. Kirkham, who is originally from East Liverpool, Ohio, moved into Brighton Gardens one year ago. She moved to Raleigh when her daughter, Betsy Parsons, and her husband retired here to be close to their grandchildren. Parsons says she faced many challenges in finding a place for her mother. "We visited a lot of facilities together. At some of them mother wouldn't get out of the car," she says. "The first day I stopped here at Brighton Gardens, I came inside by myself to check things out. Mother liked it so much she quickly joined me inside." "I love it here," Kirkham remarks. "I go out everyday. I love the outside, the air, the sun, the light." "Everything worked out good for me."
About This Project

Robert Willett
"The View" showcases the unique character of the people and places that form our community. The column explores the lives and relationships of the diverse groups that populate the Triangle. Anyone, regardless of age, race, cultural background or ethnicity, is a potential subject. We include the thoughts of those featured as they express how they view their own situation, allowing us a window into their lives.

Our approach to finding stories for the column varies. Often, we look for subjects to illustrate themes we want to explore. Other times, we may stumble across interesting subjects while on assignment or in our daily lives. We hope readers can use "The View" to enhance their understanding of their own community.
