Antoine Alston, 14, focuses all his energy into punching a bag his coach Willie Massey holds as part of his five-day-a-week evening training at the Triangle Developmental Boxing Association in Durham. "I fought with a lot of kids at school and on the streets," Alston said. "It was fun. I think that has helped me be a better boxer. I knocked out my first guy a few weeks ago. It felt good. I wasn't ready to knock him out, though. I threw a hook and he fell, that was it. Maybe someday someone will knock me out, I don't know. You never know who you might face." Alston hopes to become a champion within the next five years. "I can go places with boxing. That's what I love about it," he said.
About This Project

Robert Willett
"The View" showcases the unique character of the people and places that form our community. The column explores the lives and relationships of the diverse groups that populate the Triangle. Anyone, regardless of age, race, cultural background or ethnicity, is a potential subject. We include the thoughts of those featured as they express how they view their own situation, allowing us a window into their lives.

Chris Seward
Our approach to finding stories for the column varies. Often, we look for subjects to illustrate themes we want to explore. Other times, we may stumble across interesting subjects while on assignment or in our daily lives. We hope readers can use "The View" to enhance their understanding of their own community.
