An adult Great Blue Heron takes flight from the banks of Lake Crabtree County Park in Morrisville, where the large birds have a 30-40 nest rookery. Great Blue Herons breed abundantly in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina, building large stick nests high up in large trees over standing water, where they can hunt for food. The consume fish, insects, amphibians, and small mammals. The rookery - or nesting colony - at the lake is a natural way for the birds to protect their nesting young. "They are amazing birds beautiful birds; hey are all over this lake," said assistant Lake Crabtree park manager Deborah Robertson. Each first Saturday of the month Lake Crabtree offers a guided bird walk at 8:30 a.m.
About This Project

"The View" showcases the unique character of the people and places that form our community. The column explores the lives and relationships of the diverse groups that populate the Triangle. Anyone, regardless of age, race, cultural background or ethnicity, is a potential subject. We include the thoughts of those featured as they express how they view their own situation, allowing us a window into their lives.

Our approach to finding stories for the column varies. Often, we look for subjects to illustrate themes we want to explore. Other times, we may stumble across interesting subjects while on assignment or in our daily lives. We hope readers can use "The View" to enhance their understanding of their own community.
