Army Pfc. Frank Leinen watches as 7-year-old Marcus Lankford from Durham takes aim with a .50 caliber machine gun that is mounted on a Humvee that was on display outside the RBC Center. The Humvee was parked outside the RBC Center before the Carolina Hurricane's hockey game with the St. Louis Blues. Leinen, who is with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, enjoys showing military hardware to children. "It's nice to see their faces," he said. "They think it's the biggest thing in the world." Leinen returned recently from a four-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. About 5,500 military personnel attended the game and were recognized for their service to their country.

About This Project

Robert Willett
"The View" showcases the unique character of the people and places that form our community. The column explores the lives and relationships of the diverse groups that populate the Triangle. Anyone, regardless of age, race, cultural background or ethnicity, is a potential subject. We include the thoughts of those featured as they express how they view their own situation, allowing us a window into their lives.

Chris Seward
Our approach to finding stories for the column varies. Often, we look for subjects to illustrate themes we want to explore. Other times, we may stumble across interesting subjects while on assignment or in our daily lives. We hope readers can use "The View" to enhance their understanding of their own community.
