Linda Barnes, center, and members of the Carolina Harmony Chorus perform 'Fame' at their weekly rehearsal April 4 at the Masonic Temple in Raleigh.

When Linda Barnes moved to North Carolina from Portland, Ore., a year ago, the Carolina Harmony Chorus was a selling point. Her son-in-law encouraged her to move to North Carolina with him and her daughter. He told her about the chorus, which is a division of Sweet Adelines International, a group Barnes has been a member of since 1987. "It's an instant circle of friends," she said. The chorus attracts women ranging in age from 20 to 70, Barnes said, and is always looking for new members.

About This Project

Robert Willett
"The View" showcases the unique character of the people and places that form our community. The column explores the lives and relationships of the diverse groups that populate the Triangle. Anyone, regardless of age, race, cultural background or ethnicity, is a potential subject. We include the thoughts of those featured as they express how they view their own situation, allowing us a window into their lives.

Chris Seward
Our approach to finding stories for the column varies. Often, we look for subjects to illustrate themes we want to explore. Other times, we may stumble across interesting subjects while on assignment or in our daily lives. We hope readers can use "The View" to enhance their understanding of their own community.
