About This Project

"The View" showcases the unique character of the people and places that form our community. The column explores the lives and relationships of the diverse groups that populate the Triangle. Anyone, regardless of age, race, cultural background or ethnicity, is a potential subject. We include the thoughts of those featured as they express how they view their own situation, allowing us a window into their lives.

Our approach to finding stories for the column varies. Often, we look for subjects to illustrate themes we want to explore. Other times, we may stumble across interesting subjects while on assignment or in our daily lives. We hope readers can use "The View" to enhance their understanding of their own community.

Francie Woodin, 19, a debutante from Rocky Mount, takes a break to eat lunch during a rehearsal for the Debutante Ball at Meymandi Hall. The highly decorated stools that the debutantes use are a long-standing tradition for the ball. "Everyone gets a stool because we sit for so long," Woodin said. Hers is the one with the rose right in front of her. Each girl has one made to fit her personality, and Woodin picked a Shoshone rose. "One of my mom's best friends lives on the reservation. We lived out West for 10 years, and we have a lot of history there," she said. The ball will be held tonight.
