Judges for the 7th Annual Spelling Bee for Literacy, from left, Dale Cousins, the Cameron Village Regional Library supervisor, the Honorable Ann Marie Calabria, with the N.C. Court of Appeals, and George O'Neal III, President and CEO of Triangle Family Services, get into the spirit of the occasion by sporting bumble bee antennas, while signaling a correct word with their bee paddles. The $12,000 in proceeds from the event went to the Literacy Council of Wake County. Twelve teams of 2 and 3 members faced off at Cary Academy, with the group from SAS taking home the trophy. The Literacy Council's greatest need is for adult volunteers, which they were also recruiting at the event.

About This Project

Robert Willett
"The View" showcases the unique character of the people and places that form our community. The column explores the lives and relationships of the diverse groups that populate the Triangle. Anyone, regardless of age, race, cultural background or ethnicity, is a potential subject. We include the thoughts of those featured as they express how they view their own situation, allowing us a window into their lives.

Chris Seward
Our approach to finding stories for the column varies. Often, we look for subjects to illustrate themes we want to explore. Other times, we may stumble across interesting subjects while on assignment or in our daily lives. We hope readers can use "The View" to enhance their understanding of their own community.
