Harvested cotton marks the landscape along N.C. 49 near the Tuckertown Reservoir on a brisk November afternoon in Davidson County. The sun pokes through holes in the blanket of clouds as a cold front moves across the hills of the Uwharrie Scenic Road. It is one of 45 roads designated a Scenic Byway by the N.C. Department of Transportation. The 5-mile route from Asheboro to Concord crosses five counties -- Randolph, Davidson, Rowan, Stanly and Cabarrus. The modules of cotton "are packed so tight that they can sit for long periods of time and not deteriorate," said Billy Carter of the N.C. Cotton Producers Association.

About This Project

Robert Willett
"The View" showcases the unique character of the people and places that form our community. The column explores the lives and relationships of the diverse groups that populate the Triangle. Anyone, regardless of age, race, cultural background or ethnicity, is a potential subject. We include the thoughts of those featured as they express how they view their own situation, allowing us a window into their lives.

Chris Seward
Our approach to finding stories for the column varies. Often, we look for subjects to illustrate themes we want to explore. Other times, we may stumble across interesting subjects while on assignment or in our daily lives. We hope readers can use "The View" to enhance their understanding of their own community.
