While other players stretch and put on their game faces, Carolina Mudcats left fielder Lorenzo Scott enjoys a few moments with his 22-month-old daughter, Zoe Scott, before a game against Birmingham last month at Five County Stadium in Zebulon. Players in the minor leagues often are separated from their families during the season as they bounce from team to team and city to city working their way up to the major leagues. Scott said his daughter and wife traveled from their home in Indiana for a weeklong visit to Zebulon in June. Lorenzo Scott's stay in Zebulon was short. He since has moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where he plays for the Isotopes. "It's tough," Scott said. "I normally see my family six months a year during off season. We plan trips like the one to Zebulon during the season so we can spend time together."

"The View" showcases the unique character of the people and places that form our community. The column explores the lives and relationships of the diverse groups that populate the Triangle. Anyone, regardless of age, race, cultural background or ethnicity, is a potential subject. We include the thoughts of those featured as they express how they view their own situation, allowing us a window into their lives.

Our approach to finding stories for the column varies. Often, we look for subjects to illustrate themes we want to explore. Other times, we may stumble across interesting subjects while on assignment or in our daily lives. We hope readers can use "The View" to enhance their understanding of their own community.
