I recently visited Savoy with my family and was amazed when I tasted the French Onion Soup! This is my favorite soup, so naturally I order it most places I go. This was by far the best ever. I absolutely have to find out what they do different, because whatever it is, it is definitely culinary genius. -- J.F., Raleigh

Pete Gibson and Marshall Smith, partners and co-chefs at Savoy (7713-39 Lead Mine Road; 848-3535; www.restaurantsavoy.com), appreciate the compliment. But they modestly suggest that the "genius" behind the success of their soup is simply the patience to make everything from scratch, including the homemade beef broth that is its foundation.
