Somberly confined within stacks of fieldstone, a sculptured face looks out on the N.C. Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill. "We built that on 9/11," said Pittsboro sculptor Joe Kenlan. "We were listening to the news while we were building it." "Companion," as the weathered stone face is called, was built piece by piece as an entry in the 2001 sculpture show. It won first prize. It has been watching over the garden ever since.
