| The slate-covered steeple of the First Baptist Church rises 142 feet over downtown Raleigh, across the street from the state Capitol. The church, a gothic revival, was built between 1856 and 1859 and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the US Department of the Interior. Over the years, many people who have accessed the inside of the steeple left their marks carved into the beams, including this inscription, most likely left by a repair worker: "Ray Moore / 1974 / Did Steeple / To Please People." |
