Like an otherworldly scene from a sci-fi movie, the futuristic domed buildings at the School of Communication Arts in North Raleigh loom over 3-D animation student Sean Burford of Pittsburgh, as he makes his way inside. Each of the three concrete domes at the school is two stories high and 120 feet in diameter with a connecting media center. One of the domes contains a 200-seat, high-definition digital theater. The hurricane-resistant, energy-efficient buildings were constructed by Dome Technology Inc. of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and were completed in 2004. Students call the campus ‘Digital Circus’ because it is an arena for both fun and learning. The school offers specialized training in digital filmmaking, digital audio production, entertainment, corporate communications, advertising and publishing.
