| Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) is in full bloom along the Raleigh Beltline at the Six Forks Road overpass. The mild winter so far has made it easy on this tough plant. A native of China, winter jasmine is adaptable and neither disease nor insects trouble it too much, according to Andrew Bell, Ph.D., associate director of the North Carolina Botanical Garden. Because it's tough, winter jasmine is great for planting on banks and slopes. It is a low-growing deciduous shrub that can spread as wide as 6 or 7 feet and reach a height of 3 or 4 feet. The forecast colder weather on the way for North Carolina might slow this plant down but is not likely to stop its flowering. |
