| What a striking geometric study! The beauty and grace of St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church in North Raleigh, is fashioned in the shape of a ship, specifically an ark, a biblical reference to the story of Noah, says the Rev. Misaeil Abou El Kheir, St. Mary’s priest. Coptic church architecture incorporates one of three defining shapes: the cruciform, the circle and the ship. The Coptic Church is based on the teachings of St. Mark, who brought Christianity to Egypt during the reign of Roman emperor Nero in the first century. St. Mary was inaugurated Oct. 1, 1994 and currently serves about 135 families, according to Father Misaeil (as he is known in his congregation). There are two Coptic churches in North Carolina, St. Mary and St. Mark in Charlotte. |
