| Blazing by at 55 mph, motorists might miss the sweeping lines and geometric patterns created by the multilayered overpasses and on and off ramps of Interstate 540 as they pass over U.S. 70 near RDU International Airport. But with the right light, the bold blue sky as a background and an artist’s eye for composition, even this most utilitarian structure becomes a work of art, a monument to our need to move quickly to our next destination. Construction of I-540, known as the Outer Loop, began in 1992. Today, it links U.S. 1 in North Raleigh to I-40 near RTP. That 17-mile stretch has been open since 2002. The next three segments, five miles through RTP, seven miles from North Raleigh to Knightdale, and two miles from U.S. 64 to U.S. 64/264 bypass, are expected to be completed by August 2007. |
