| Walls can be more than just flat, painted surfaces to separate inside from outside or to divide spaces within structures. Walls can be dramatic style statements (just look at the bold direction some of the latest wallpaper designs take). A wall in the front office of Wilburn Elementary School in Raleigh is a window to the past. Student self-portraits from 1994 cover the entire wall. The kids were each given squares of paper and asked to capture their own image during art class. The blond girl at center left, Amber May, was in second grade at the time. Today, Amber is 18 years old and a rising sophomore at East Carolina University. Her mother, Belinda May, was a parent volunteer at Wilburn in 1994 and has been working in the front office for about eight years now. |
