A brown pelican swoops low across the waters of the Atlantic Ocean off Whalebone as a wave breaks near the shore. These majestic birds were threatened by pesticides in the early 1970s but have made a wonderful recovery thanks in large part to the banning of DDT. Brown pelicans and Peruvian pelicans dive into the water for their food, whereas all other species of pelicans scoop up their meals while they swim along. Pelicans can be found on all continents except Antarctica. Pelican fossils have been dated at almost 40 millions years old.
