A daylily is in full bloom in a yard in northern Durham County. The scientific name for daylily is Hemerocallis, from Greek words meaning 'beauty' and 'day' and referring to the fact that each bloom lasts only one day. In most daylilies, the throat color (the center portion of the flower) differs from the rest of the flower. The anthers at the tips of the stamens are often darker in color ... sometimes black.
