A Methodist minister from Garner has been elected a bishop in the United Methodist Church.
The election of the Rev. Paul Leeland was announced Thursday at a meeting of the denomination's Southeastern Jurisdiction at Lake Junaluska. An assignment committee is considering where Leeland will serve in the next four years.
Leeland, 59, currently serves as assistant to the bishop of the Raleigh Episcopal Area and director of ministerial relations in the North Carolina Conference, which includes churches in 56 counties in the eastern half of the state.
He previously was pastor at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Raleigh, Westminster United Methodist Church in Kinston and St. Luke United Methodist Church in Sanford. He also is a former district superintendent.
A consecration service for Leeland will be held at Saturday at Lake Junaluska.
