2. New Year's Day Metric

Where: Departs from Pleasant Union School on Pleasant Union Church Road between Six Forks and Mount Vernon Church roads in North Raleigh.

When: 10 a.m.

Contact: Tom Sheffield, 248-5817.

What's shakin'? So you have been riding since October and fancy yourself in good shape? Perhaps this quasi-N.C. Bicycle Club/Road Dogs ride is more your speed, provided that speed averages 19 to 20 mph. This route explores the countryside north of Falls Lake and has a 50K option as well. "We've been having about 50-60 show up for the ride, depending on the weather," e-reports Tom Sheffield, the ride's de facto spokesman. Despite a reputation for being a long (62 miles), fast ride, Sheffield says this ride also has its various contingents.

Take a dive

NEW YEAR'S DAY DIVE

Where: Fantasy Lake Scuba Park, Rolesville. From Raleigh, take U.S. 401 north to Rolesville. Go right on Young Street out of town, then left on Quarry Road. Fantasy Lake is on the left.

When: 10 a.m.

Contact: Capital Scuba at 570-3483, www.capitalscuba.com.

What's shakin? What's not shakin' when you're in 47-degree water? Even wearing drysuits, most participants only stay in the lake long enough to claim bragging rights. Then it's topside to dry off, bundle up and partake in a little barbecue. Regarding water temp: Capital Scuba's David Waechter was in the water recently and reports, "In a drysuit, we didn't really feel it too much." Like we said, it's more about the barbecue and bragging rights. The lake's usual $15 entry fee applies.

On the water

We're sure there are folks who dig out the canoe or kayak for a trip down the Neuse or paddle on Beaverdam Lake, but they don't seem to be organized about it

ROLLAPOOLOOZA

When: Jan. 7, 6-10 p.m.

Where: Optimist Pool. From Six Forks Road in Raleigh turn west onto Northclift Road, then left at Whittier Drive.

Contact: Raleigh Parks & Rec. Adventure Programs, 831-6855, www.raleighnc.gov/rollapoolooza.

What's shakin'? Love whitewater, but not so much the cold? Under the heated, fabric dome of the 50-meter Optimist Pool, you'll find a whitewater kayaker's midwinter's night dream. Various instructional clinics, a swap meet, new products to test and buy (Liquid Logic, Dagger, Wavesport and Pyranha are among previous participants). Demo boats provided by Great Outdoor Provision Co. Minimum age is 12; 12 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult. $10 entry fee.
