Don’t even say that headline in my house. I cannot be a sane mom in the morning without a cup of coffee or tea. Sometimes, I do both.
I have a K-cup machine that sits on my kitchen counter. I am usually the first one up in my house every weekday morning. Like clockwork, I greet my cute, little red machine with a smile at 6:36 on the dot.
Shhhh! Don’t tell my family, but I love my coffee machine more than them in the morning. Here is why.
It doesn’t ask me anything that early in the morning. It’s not messy, and it lets me stare at my email on my phone in silence during the less than two minutes it takes to brew a cup of piping, hot java.
Never miss a local story.
Those 30 minutes with my coffee is my special time.
I get all out of whack if my time with my coffee gets interrupted. Nothing can upset my apple cart more than if feet belonging to my two children follow me down the steps in the morning before I can make and enjoy my cup of coffee.
That sometimes happens to me on the weekend.
I set my ground rules though.
No making pancakes until I’ve had my first cup of coffee.
And while I’m confessing, having that first cup of the coffee in the morning while listening to “My Little Pony” on the TV is just not the same music to my ears as complete morning silence.
I try to be a good mom, and I know there are lot better women out there who are better moms than me. However, let me go ahead and say that without a cup of coffee first thing in the morning, it’s perfectly OK for you to feel sorry for my children. They deserve your sympathy.
And if you are one of these moms who are energized, singing and dancing while making breakfast, and ready to play in the morning without a cup of coffee, then all I can say is, “What drug are you taking?”
Be sure to pop over to Leigh’s personal blog this week to get a curated list of her favorite coffee shops in Greater Raleigh. Apparently, she needs lots of coffee to this parenting job.
You can follow Leigh on Instagram to see where she is next. Leigh is taking a press trip to Italy next week so she’ll be back after a few Wednesdays. We bet she’ll get some good coffee there.
