We have now been living in North Carolina for a year and a half and I want to say a special thank you to one of the locations that made our family really feel at home when we moved to the Triangle, the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA). The NCMA has become one of our family's favorite places to visit and we have been countless times, always with at least two young boys in tow and sometimes a third when my nephew has come with us. The NCMA has provided us with outings regardless of the season.
Whenever I meet someone new in the area I ask if they have visited the NCMA. I am surprised that many people haven't visited yet so I want to get the word out to all of the families in the area to go and visit this amazing, family friendly location right on our doorstep. In addition to the two museum buildings, which house an outstanding and diverse collection of art spanning many styles and periods, there is a beautiful museum park and greenway to explore.
You can bring a picnic and set up shop virtually anywhere on the grounds. The kids can ride their bikes, or scooters, you can even bring your dogs! We usually combine our trips with a walk around the greenway and a wander around one of the museum buildings to revisit old favorites and to spot what is new. When there is a special exhibit going on, such as the recent Porsche By Design exhibit, a more casual themed cafe is set up in the East Building which provides a family friendly dining/refreshment option. For my birthday in December we enjoyed lunch at Iris, the restaurant in the main building, which is more suitable for adult visitors. There is also a cafe cart in the main building serving warm or cold drinks.
Whenever we have visitors in town we head to the NCMA, whenever we are in doubt about how to spend a day with no firm plans on the horizon, we head to the NCMA. This summer I plan on taking advantage of their Summer concert series, which take place outside. They also have a schedule of monthly family events including Family Fun Saturdays and Thursday morning art activities for younger children.
Never miss a local story.
I have visited art museums all over the world and am so happy to have what has now become one of my favorite right here in the Triangle. Take your family, take your visitors, you will not be disappointed.
