One of my favorite parts of my birthday has always been reading the sweet cards from my family and opening the thoughtful presents they give me. But as with most moms of small kids, I could always tell that the presents were mostly my husband’s idea with my kids adding a cute drawing to the card. But now that they kids are getting older, my recent birthday was a bit different.
My 9-year-old son decided that a great present for me would be some new ideas for this column and spent 30 minutes trying to come up with topics for me to write about. Although his only idea was to write about him not being able come up with an idea, I was touched by the thoughtfulness and he had a new appreciation for my job.
My daughter made a handmade card with a drawing of the two of us and a sweet message about how much she loved me. She then spent most of the afternoon decorating a festive cup for me to use at my birthday party complete with the words “Birthday Girl” on the side.
And the best part was that my husband was also surprised at the presents and had no idea what the kids had wrapped up for me. While it might not be diamonds or a new car, I have to admit that these presents were some of my favorite gifts I have ever gotten. And I really can’t wait to see what they get for me next year.
