The News & Observer’s Andrea Weigl won first place for Best Newspaper Food Coverage in the 2014 Association of Food Journalists’ awards competition.
Weigl bested The (Baton Rouge, La.) Advocate, a perennial winner, and the Akron Beacon Journal in the below-120,000 circulation category. Awards were announced at AFJ’s annual conference in Memphis, Tenn., last week.
The awards, which recognized excellence in 17 categories of food writing and editing, visuals and multimedia, drew 272 entries worldwide.
In addition to The N&O’s award, Kathleen Purvis, The Charlotte Observer’s food editor, won second place in the 120,000-200,000-circulation category for Best Newspaper Food Coverage; and first place for columns and feature writing.
First-place winners receive cash awards.
