Cooking classes with Chef Amy Tornquist

Durham chef Amy Tornquist of Watts Grocery and Sage & Swift catering has announced a new series of cooking classes.

Tornquist and her catering director and food blogger, Matthew Lardie, teach the classes, which run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Here is the upcoming schedule:

Sept. 2: Southern Pies. The class explores the history behind such Southern classics as pecan pie, buttermilk chess pie and sweet potato pie. Students will learn how to make a pie crust and various fillings and take home individual pies to enjoy later.

Sept. 23: Southern Pies II. This class will cover double crust pies, lattice crusts and how to combat soggy crusts when making fruit pies. Students will take home individual pies to enjoy later.

Oct. 7: Falls Soups and Stews. Learn how to make fall soups and stews, including butternut squash and chili.

Oct. 21: Holiday Food Gifts. Learn how to make hot cocoa mix, spiced nuts and homemade marshmallows. Students will take home small samples.

Nov. 4: Thanksgiving Sides. Students will learn how to make dressing, garlic mashed potatoes, scalloped oysters, gravy and cranberry sauce.

Dec. 2: Holiday Cookies. Learn how to make classic cookie recipes and decorating tips. Students will take home cookies.

The classes cost $50 per person. If you book two or more classes, you get a 15 percent discount.
