Durham chef Amy Tornquist is offering a series of cooking classes out of her catering company’s kitchen. Tornquist owns Sage & Swift Catering, Watts Grocery restaurant and Hummingbird Bakery, all in Durham.
These “Southern Gourmet” cooking classes will be led by Tornquist and her operations manager Matthew Lardie. They will be hands-on classes and limited to no more than 14 students.
Here is the schedule: Jan. 15, Southern pies ($50); Jan. 29, Pot roast and Pinot Noir ($50); Feb. 12, Soup for Supper ($50); Feb. 26, Perfect Pairings for Wine and Cheese ($50); March 5, Easy Cheesemaking ($35); March 19, Stir Fry 101 ($55). To reserve a class, call 919-957-7889. If you book two or more classes, you get a 15 percent discount.
UPDATED on 1/6: More classes have been added to the schedule: Soup for Supper on March 5 ($50), Southern Biscuits on April 9 ($50), Southern Pies on April 23 ($50), and Stir Fry on May 7 ($55).
About the biscuit class, Lardie wrote: “Participants will learn the secrets behind a true Southern biscuit —how to make them, what type of flour is best and what not to do while baking biscuits.”
Lardie notes: Most classes are sold out but there are still openings for Wine & Cheese on Feb. 26, Easy Cheese Making on May 21 (new date), Biscuits on April 9, Southern Pies on April 23 and Stir Fry on May 7.
