New cocktail and dessert bar opens tonight in downtown Raleigh

Bittersweet, the work of longtime Raleigh baker Kim Hammer, opens tonight at 5 p.m. on East Martin Street.

Bittycakes owner Kim Hammer is opening a dessert and cocktail bar, Bittersweet, at 5 p.m. tonight in downtown Raleigh.

Hammer has been a longtime Raleigh baker and known for selling her baked goods at Helios Cafe. Her new spot has been a longtime dream and is located at 16 E. Martin St., near Oro Restaurant and across the street from The Mecca.

“My favorite things about food are dessert, coffee and cocktails,” Hammer said.

Bittersweet encompasses all of those favorites. Right now, Bittersweet will be open from 5 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays serving the cocktails and desserts. Hammer says they hope to open the coffee and pastry service in the mornings in about a month.

Here are some highlights from the menu:

For the dessert lovers, there is a cookie plate for $6 (chocolate-chip sea salt cookie, homemade Oreo and an everything bar), a bowl of fresh strawberries from Lil Farm with Maple View Farms whipped cream for $7 and the shot of vanilla buttercream for $1.

For the cocktail lovers, Hammer’s favorite drink at the moment is the Rye or Die, an adult cherry coke with rye whiskey, cherry liqueur and Mexican coke for $11. There is also the 3rd Shift Boilermaker, a shout-out to food industry folks, is a shot of Fernet Branca and a can of Shift beer for $10 and a Honeysuckle Daiquiri with rum, homey, lemon, orange and mint for $9. They also serve beer, wine, coffee and wide selections of sparkling wine and gin, two of Hammer’s favorites.
