Wine tasting series starts next week at Herons

Umstead Uncorked kicks off next Thursday with a South African wine tasting.

The Umstead Hotel and Spa’s wine tasting series, Umstead Uncorked, starts up again next Thursday with South African wines.

Herons’ sommelier Hai Tran will lead a one-hour tasting for guests and guide them through four South African wines paired with complementary small bites by chef de cuisine John Childers. The event costs $40 per person. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 919-447-4000.

June 26: Discover great American wines for Independence Day celebrations.

July 31: Stuck in a wine rut? Participants will learn the nuances and flavor profiles of popular wines to guide them off the beaten path to discover new varietals.

Aug. 28: Wine Spectator magazine recently named Spanish Rioja “Wine of the Year,” making it an excellent time to dive into the world of Spanish wines.

Sept. 25: My Big Fat Greek Wine Tasting: Discover great tasting, often undervalued whites and reds made in a range of styles.

Oct. 30: Trick or Treat: Is blind tasting just a party trick or a useful tool? Tran will guide guests through the world of deductive tasting.

Nov. 20: Wines fit for a holiday feast.
