In the season five premiere of “A Chef’s Life,” chef Vivian Howard will share the spotlight with a hard-to-beat contender for just about the best thing on earth: tomatoes.
Over the course of four seasons, the hit PBS show has followed Howard and husband Ben Knight through the joys and struggles of running restaurants, raising a family and rediscovering life in Eastern North Carolina after years away. The fifth season will follow Howard as she tours the South supporting her acclaimed cookbook, “Deep Run Roots,” and the many ingredients that make the region special, like bourbon, persimmons and rattlesnake beans. UNC-TV will begin airing the new season Oct. 5.
On Sept. 10, the Carolina Theatre in Durham is hosting a screening of the premiere, plus a Q&A with Howard and the show’s director/producer Cynthia Hill of Markay Media. Tickets to the premiere and a VIP party beforehand have been sold out for weeks.
Well, not all of the tickets are gone. We have two tickets for you and a friend to the premiere screening and Q&A at 3:30 p.m.
Our tickets won’t get you in the VIP party, but there’s a free party beforehand that’s open to the public. It’s from noon to 3 p.m. on the outdoor plaza between the Carolina Theatre and the Durham Convention Center. There will be food trucks, DJ Gemynii and show swag. You might also see Howard and show regulars farmer Warren Brothers, force of nature Lillie Hardy and Vivian’s mother, Scarlett Howard, passing through. And if you’re a beer drinker, look for the Sierra Nevada and Vivian Howard collaboration, a cucumber saison.
