Durham chef Matt Kelly, who owns Mateo Tapas and Vin Rouge, says he hopes to open two new restaurants in downtown Durham by the end of May.
Kelly has two projects opening up next door to Mateo Tapas: Mothers & Sons Trattoria, an Italian restaurant that Kelly is opening in early spring 2016 with chef Josh DeCarolis; and Lucky’s Deli wwith Drew Brown, former co-owner of Piedmont restaurant and staff chef at Firsthand Foods. Kelly’s trio of restaurants will all be on 100 block of West Chapel Hill Street.
Last week, Kelly said the chairs, tables and kitchen equipment have all arrived and they are finishing the wood floors. Kelly said they are aiming for the third week in May for Mothers & Sons and could open Lucky’s Deli sooner.
Mothers & Sons will be a traditional Italian trattoria that will offer both extruded and completely handmade pasta (as in mixed, rolled and shaped by hand). It also will serve meats and vegetables cooked on a wood-fired brick hearth.
Lucky’s will take inspiration from both the Italian and Jewish deli traditions. It will serve sandwiches , seasonal prepared salads and sides. They will make housemade pastrami and matzo ball soup, as well as roast beef, turkey and ham. They also will sell good-quality imported salamis and prosciuttos. (Read more about Lucky’s Deli HERE.)
This isn’t the end of Kelly’s plans: he hopes to open a Durham seafood restaurant later in the year.
