Learn how to create a beautiful vegetable garden
Fuquay-Varina gardening teacher Brie Arthur is teaching classes on her “Foodscaping” design techinque.
Foodscaping is “a landscape practice that embraces both beauty and utility in its function.” Arthur will explain how to design, build and maintain food systems in small growing spaces. Students will learn the latest about container growing, living walls and hydroponic systems, according to the class description.
The classes are at Arthur’s Fuquay-Varina home from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 19, Oct. 7, Oct. 24 and Oct. 28. The cost is $150.

Gourd arts and crafts festival
The 74th annual N.C. Gourd Festival is Sept. 12-13 at the state fairgrounds in Raleigh.
The festival, hosted by the N.C. Gourd Society, features displays of gourds from around the world and vendors of dried gourds, gourd seeds, gourd crafts, gourd art, books and crafting supplies.
There are also many workshops where attendees can learn how to turn gourds into fairy houses, keychains, paintings and sculptures. Plus, the festival includes competitions for experienced gourd crafters. Details about the classes and competition can be found at ncgourdsociety.org/festival
The event is 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 12. and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 13. It costs $2; free for children 15 and under.
The festival is at the Holhouser Building at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, 1025 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh.
Reminder: Garden tour in Fuquay-Varina
The Fuquay-Varina Garden Club is hosting its 2015 Fall Garden Tour Sept. 12-13.
Gardens are open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. The weekend also includes artisan vendors, a Saturday luncheon, a raffle and door prizes.
Tickets cost $18 on the day of the tour or $15 in advance at The Garden Hut, David Anthony’s Gifts, Ashley’s Art Gallery or online.
