My Design Signature: I spend a lot of time with my clients talking about how they are going to use their space. It’s very important to me not only that the space is beautiful but that it is functional and useable for them and their families for the long term. Some spaces are beautiful. Some are functional. I strive to provide both for all the spaces I create.
Best Travel Souvenir: My favorite travel souvenir is actually something my husband picked up for me on a trip to San Francisco. He found this great ceramics company, Heath Ceramics, and brought back two beautiful glazed bud vases which currently live on our kitchen window sill. They are blue and green, two of my favorite colors, and the texture and feel of the finish are just lovely.
Round Table or Rectangle: I love oversized rectangular tables. We have a large extended family and having a big table is something that has become pretty important to us. I have found this to be true for lots of our clients. Being able to seat everyone together around one table during the holidays is lovely and a large rectangular table is usually easier to fit into a space than a large round one. Having a rectangular extension table is even better as it allows versatility throughout the year.
Best $250 Makeover in a Living Room: I would have to say throw pillows. They come in so many shapes, sizes, colors and price ranges. Changing the pillows on a couch or chair can completely change the feel of the furniture and the room.
Front Door Facelift: Consider painting your front door a nice bright color that guides your visitors’ eyes to the entrance of your home. A front door sets the tone for the rest of your house. Red is a great, and popular option, but there are so many other great front door colors to consider as well.
Best outdoor party décor essential: String lights around a deck or patio, no matter the time of year, can add a soft, inviting feel to any occasion. Consider running some vintage-inspired outdoor string lights overhead on a pergola or outdoor twinkle lights around a deck railing or umbrella for an elegant, flattering glow.
Tool I can’t do without: The tool I can’t live without is definitely my metal, 35-foot, heavy-duty tape measure. I use it all the time, not only for measuring rooms we are working on, but as a pointer when discussing details with a client or contractor and as a scale when reviewing drawings.
Flea Market Must Buy: I love old cabinet hardware. While new pieces are what we use most often, vintage pieces, especially to replace the hardware on an existing piece of furniture, can be just the finishing touch needed to make that piece really special. I especially love old glass and crystal pieces for a little extra sparkle.
Favorite Space in your home and why: My favorite space in our home is our front deck. We are set up on a little hill and have a covered front deck just big enough for two. I love sitting out there in the evening, watching the rain, with a nice glass of wine, looking down on our lightly wooded front yard, with my husband and our two cats. I love the North Carolina mountains and our deck feels like a peaceful cabin in the woods.
Favorite Design Blog: My favorite design blog is The Sweethome. They review all kinds of things for the home and my husband and I often make purchases for our own home based on their reviews and articles. I love their unbiased approach and how they provide different viewpoints depending on your particular needs for a product.
