For the first time in St. Louis Zoo history, a cheetah has given birth to eight cheetah cubs. The cubs, three males and five females, were born at the River’s Edge Cheetah Breeding Center on Nov. 26, 2017. Mother and cubs are doing well and will remain in their private, indoor maternity den behind the scenes at River’s Edge for the next several months.
Harlem-Roscoe (Illinois) firefighters were dispatched to a call for a man trying to rescue his dog that had fallen through thin ice into a lake on Dec. 11, 2017. The dog's owner found his dog in the water and tried using a kayak on the ice to get to him. About half way out he broke through the ice himself and was now also in the frigid water. Firefighter Lt. Justin Mayton donned a cold water suit who took a second kayak onto the ice. He reached the owner of the dog who was able to climb into the kayak. Mayton was then able to reach the dog and he and the dog were pulled back to the shore by firefighters. The dog and the owner were warmed up in the ambulance and taken home.
A woman caught a thieving squirrel red-handed as it repeatedly stole treats in a basket intended for delivery workers. Michele Boudreaux says she puts treats in a basket outside her New Jersey home for delivery workers each year during the holiday season.
They did it again: a family of lynxes who shot to online stardom after visiting Alaska photographer Tim Newton’s deck in September dropped by again in November. This time, Cathy Newton got video as the kittens played on the deck of the home outside Anchorage.
Chris Hale found a cat suffering from dehydration in a tool box of a burned house in the Coffey Park neighborhood of Santa Rosa, California Thursday, October 12, 2017. Rescuers planned to take the cat to a shelter if the owner isn't located.
Bakersfield, California firefighters rescued a pet dog from a residential structure fire. The small dog was unresponsive when pulled from the interior, and as its concerned owner looked on, firefighters revived the pet using a specialized animal oxygen mask and high flow oxygen.
Surveillance cameras inside the rhino barn at the Cincinnati Zoo recorded the birth and mom and baby’s first moments. Fewer than 5,000 black rhinos remain in the world. The birth happened on July 17, 2017.
