A ceremony to honor a World War II veteran today in Elizabethtown has been canceled because of his family's concerns for his health, the N.C. National Guard reported.

Paul Henry Hoffman Sr. of Rockingham was wounded twice in the Battle of the Bulge, but never received his second Purple Heart. He was assigned as a heavy machine gunner in the battle.

Hoffman, 83, was a member of the 30th Infantry Division, which was the forerunner of the N.C. National Guard's 30th Heavy Separate Brigade.
