Gaston E. Small, Jr., of Elizabeth City, NC died at home on Sunday, May 3, 2015. He was born on October 27, 1926 to Gaston E. Small and Essie Jennings Small. A veteran of World War II, Gaston enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1943 at age seventeen, after graduating from Weeksville High School. For the duration of the war he served as a crewman aboard the USS Alexandria in the North and South Atlantic.
Gaston was a lifelong farmer and, with his brother, William A. Small, founded and operated G. E. Small & Sons, Inc., a produce and grain dealer, grower and shipper in Weeksville. He was named the area’s outstanding young farmer in 1957, and later served as president of the North Carolina Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association. He was a member and past president of the Elizabeth City Jaycees.
Surviving are his wife of sixty-five years, Beverly Markham Small; his children, G. Elvin Small, III (Wendy), F. Mark Small (Stacy), and Anita S. Oldham (Kirk); ten grandchildren, Gaston E. Small, IV, Sarah S. Crosby, Andrew C. P. Small, Garrett P. Small, Matthew M. Small, Natalie B. Small, Susannah A. Small, R. E. Aiken Small, Ashley L. Oldham, and Jessie R. Oldham; and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Marjorie S. Berry; his friend and helper, Evelyn James; and a special cousin, Frank A. Jennings, Jr.
Few men have worked harder than Gaston Small, and few have been more generous with God’s gifts. Gaston’s greatest joy was his family, of whom he was inordinately proud. He truly cherished his friends and neighbors. His eulogy will be in the memories held by those who loved him.
Gaston grew up in and was a member of Newbegun United Methodist Church. His memorial service will be conducted there on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. by the Reverend Doctor Roger Braun and the Reverend Doctor Kirk B. Oldham.
