What a life! What a smile ! Libby is the daughter of Dr. William Louis and Nell Gaskill Patman of Siler City and Ocracoke. She graduated from St. Mary’s School in Raleigh and UNC Chapel Hill. She is survived here in Wilmington by her loving husband George T. Clark, Jr., her children Dr. George T. Clark III and his family, wife Pamela Tollifson Clark, and children Robert Thompson Clark and Jessica Elizabeth Clark all of Raleigh, and William Louis Clark and his family, wife Margaret Hynes Clark and son William James Clark of Wilmington, her sisters Susan Day and Rebecca Chandler of Raleigh, and her brother William Louis Patman of Seven Lakes.
Libby and George married in 1957. Over the years they lived in Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, and Raleigh. While in Raleigh, Libby was the first female realtor hired at leading broker Simpson and Underwood, working there while George did his public service in NC Government. Libby was also invited to and lectured the Secretary of Human Resources and his staff on management procedures.
In Wilmington, Libby was an active member of the Junior League, serving a term as President, and a charter member and President of the Cape Fear Garden Club. Libby earned her Master Gardener certificate, and this was very evident for any who toured their home on South Live Oak Parkway. Libby continued her real estate career locally with Robertson, Deschamps, and Grice. Through her early years, in addition to raising the boys and providing a wonderful home for all, she found time for tennis, golf, bridge, and traveling with George and friends throughout the US, Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean. She was a fantastic cook and she and George often hosted the grandest parties with warmth, style, and grace. She studied art with her sisters, Becky, Susan, and friends and made a few trips to La Romita Art School in Italy to further her skills.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 PM on Friday, May 8 at the home of William and Happy Clark, 2501 Mimosa Place, Wilmington.
Never miss a local story.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, May 9, 2015 at St. James Episcopal Church.
The family would like to thank all of those who have been a part of Libby’s life for their love and concern over the past several years. We’ll all remember her smile and kindness and grace.
Her family is particularly appreciative of the care she received at Pacifica Senior Living, her home for the last seven years. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1406 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401
