Mr. John Robert Brown, 68, of the Windom Community, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 18, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Campus.
A native of Sampson County, he was a son of the late R. Ennis Brown and A. Pearline Coley Brown. He was also preceded in death by a former wife, Mary Ann Brady Brown; and two brothers, David E. Brown and Maxie C. Brown. He retired as the Director of Nursing with the NC Department of Corrections. He attended Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church. He was awarded the Order of the Lone Leaf Pine by Gov. Jim Hunt. He was listed in Who’s Who of Junior Colleges and active in the Republican Party in Yancey County. He also loved creating stained glass pieces and barbequing. In more recent years, he became more adventurous enjoying activities with his wife, Theresa. Together, they shared activities as zip lining and segway rides.
Surviving are his wife, Theresa Bradford Brown; two step-daughters, Joni Green and husband Roger, and Sosha Hinz, all of Valdosta, GA; two step-sons; Matthew Wilson and wife Deanna of Wake Forest, and Mark Wilson of Apex; a sister, Lillie Brown Patterson of Burlington; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, May 22, at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington with Rev. Henry Swanzey and Rev. Wes Sharpe officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Rich & Thompson Funeral & Cremation Service in Burlington from 12:30 – 1:45 PM, prior to the service. At other times, they will be at the residence of his sister, Lillie Patterson.
