Josephine Hutchison Fitts, 97, died on May 25, 2015. She was born January 17, 1918, in Winston-Salem to the late Harvey Bennett Hutchison and Sarah Meta Fletcher Hutchison. On August 31, 1940, she married Sanford Burton Fitts, Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son, Sanford Burton Fitts III, and sisters, Meta Hutchison Bigham, Mary MacVeigh Hutchison, and Eleanor Hutchison Liles.
She was a 1935 graduate of R. J. Reynolds High School and a 1939 graduate of Salem College, where she was vice-president of the Student Government Association and played varsity tennis, hockey and basketball. She was a member of The Scorpions honorary society. She taught math and science in Mayodan, NC, and at R. J. Reynolds High School and Wiley Junior High School in Winston-Salem. She was a life-long member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she was a teacher in the Sunday school, leader of St. Mary’s Circle, member of the Altar Guild, enthusiastic maker of Palm Sunday crosses, and a leading participant in the St. Paul’s Christmas Bazaar for 40 years, starting the tradition of making and selling Advent Calendars. She was past president of the Reynolds High School PTA and past president of Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, honorary society of educators.
She is survived by a daughter, Agnes Fitts Marshall Auman; son-in-law, Robert Meyer Auman, of Raleigh; daughter-in-law, Celia Castella Fitts of Miami; grandchildren, Jennifer Fitts Rabb of Lamont, FL, Sanford Burton Fitts IV of Austin, TX, Claudia Isabel Fitts of Miami, Dr. Robert Nelson Marshall III and wife, Dr. Lorena Benavides, of Raleigh, Karen Marshall Vandersea and husband, Dr. Brian Vandersea, of Chapel Hill, and Dr. Allen Fletcher Marshall and wife Clair of Raleigh; step-granddaughter, Abigail Auman Scheer and husband Matthew of Chapel Hill; great-grandchildren, Sanford Burton Fitts V of Austin, Rachel Elizabeth Vandersea, Caroline Fletcher Vandersea, Sarah Kuipers Vandersea of Chapel Hill, Hutchison Thomas Marshall, Nelson Fitts Marshall, Emma Rose Marshall, and Charlotte Josephine Marshall of Raleigh, Margaret Allison Scheer and Grant Richmond Scheer of Chapel Hill; nephews Hugh E. Bigham and wife Mary of Charlotte, Paul W. Liles and wife Brenda of Roebuck, SC, Harvey Hutchison Liles and wife Kathy of Robbins, NC; six great-nieces and nephews, and devoted friends, Jack and Virginia Ring of Germanton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Wed., June 3 at Salem Funeral Home, Reynolda Road Chapel, 2599 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem 27106. There will be a private burial at Salem Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 11 am on Thursday, June 4, with the Reverend John E. Shields officiating. Following the service, the family will host a reception in the Colhoun Room at the church.
