Gordon C. Barg, 83, passed away May 26, 2015 at his residence after a prolonged illness.
He was born in Montezuma, Iowa on July 18, 1931. Gordon graduated valedictorian from Estherville High School in Estherville, Iowa in 1949 and attended Iowa State University obtaining a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1953. In 1962, he received a Master's Degree in Business from Ball State University.
He lived most of his life in Anderson, Indiana. He was on the Board of Directors at Edgewood Country Club for 6 years. He loved tutoring students in algebra and geometry and for 14 years, worked with the St. Johns Adopt-A-School program. For 8 years, he was president of Merchants Older Buddies (MOB), a senior charitable organization. He was a member of St. Matthew UMC for over 35 years and served on many boards.
He retired in 1991 from Delco Remy, a division of General Motors, after 38 years of service. At one point, he was superintendent of the battery plant in Olathe, Kansas and later superintendent of Plant 7 in Anderson.
In 2009, he and his wife moved to Fearrington Village in Pittsboro, NC to be closer to family. Gordon was an avid bridge player and enjoyed playing golf.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Beverly (Carman) Barg whom he married on April 18, 1954; one son, Robert Barg (Mary Anne) of Dallas, Texas; and one daughter, Lisa Emrich (Steve) of Pittsboro, North Carolina. He has six granddaughters, Courtney Barg, Kristen Barg, Taylor Barg, Sarah Emrich, Lauren Emrich, and Abby Emrich. He is also survived by a sister-in law and several nieces and nephews that live in Lenexa, KS.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Barg, and father, Charles Barg.
A memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday June 6, 2015 at Christ United Methodist Church in Southern Village, 800 Market St, in Chapel Hill, NC with Pastor David Goerhing officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Steve Emrich Fund at CUMC or UNC Hospice Care.
