Dr. Ray Braman Benson, Jr., passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at New Hanover Regional Hospital. He was born March 23, 1934 to the late Ray Braman and Alpha Boles Benson in Oakland California. Dr. Benson was also preceded in death by his sister, Sheila Benson.
Dr. Benson received his degrees from Berkley University in California. His great grandparents, Josiah Benson and Dr. Jarvis Braman were pioneers of the West settling in Sonama County, California. His mother’s family was indigenous to California and Oregon. In 1968, after working with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in California, he came to N.C. State University as a professor in the Department of Materials Science and retired from there in 2005. He enjoyed his retirement with coastal living and his most faithful dog, Hallee Hall.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Saint Stephens Episcopal Church, 201 Denim Drive, Erwin, NC with Father David McGuinness officiating.
He is survived by wife of 35 years, Jean Strickland Benson; son, Scott Benson; daughters, Sandra and husband Tom Olinger and Susan and husband Dr. Pete Imperial; grandchildren, Christian and Elizabeth Olinger and Isabella Imperial; brother, Richard and wife Catherine, all of California.
