A memorial service will be held for Lt. Col. Ret. Bill Standley on Monday, July 13, 2015, at 2PM at the Cotten Funeral Home chapel in New Bern, NC. He died on Wednesday morning, July 8th, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. He was 87.
Bill was born in Fairfield, Iowa and earned an MA from the University of Northern Iowa and later an MBA from George Washington University. He was a career Marine ground officer and naval aviator for 23 years, serving in Korea and Vietnam and was stationed at Cherry Point from 1968 until he retired from the Marine Corps in 1972. He owned Standley Red Carpet Realty for 25 years and was active in Civitan, the Retired Officers Association, Havelock Chamber of Commerce, Lion’s Club, Havelock and New Bern Board of Realtors, and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Havelock, NC. He supported Liver Cancer Research at Duke Medical Center after the death of his wife, Millie, in 1997. He is survived by his older sister Eve of Des Moines, Iowa, his daughters Terry Hammersley (Mike) of Carrboro, NC, LeeAnne Pendergraft (Sandy) of Chapel Hill, NC, Merrily Sable of Raleigh, NC, seven grandchildren (Eric, Aaron, Laura, Sam, Kelsey, Spencer and Jenna) and one great-grandson, Cooper.
