Dr. Charles (Chuck) Bingham Davey, 87, passed away July 7, 2015 . Son of Francis J. Davey and Mary E. Davey, he was raised in upstate NY, living in Rochester and Scottsville, working beside his grandfather on the farm, enjoying family, sailing and canoeing on Lake Ontario.
Chuck earned a B.S. in Forestry from New York State College of Forestry in Syracuse, in 1950, and a M.S. & Ph.D in Forest Soils and Microbiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1952 and 1955.
Elizabeth (Beth) A. Thompson of Madison met Chuck, and soon became his wife. They raised a family and navigated the world together for 63 years.
After serving in the U.S. Army Chemical Corp, Chuck preformed research for the United States Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, MD.
With a desire to teach, in 1962, Chuck began a half century of work with N.C. State University in three departments; Soil Science, Forestry, and Plant Pathology, a testimony to his interdisciplinary approach. He served as Department Head of Forestry from 1970-78, then returned to his joy of research and teaching. In 1992, Chuck became professor emeritus from NCSU, but continued teaching and research, and added domestic & international consulting with Zobel Forestry Associates, for the next two decades.
