Betsy Hodges Bernard, 90, died Thursday, July 16, 2015, at the Forest at Duke Retirement Community in Durham.
Betsy was born on June 11, 1925, in Leaksville (now Eden), North Carolina. Her parents were Martha (Blakeney) and Luther H. Hodges.
Betsy graduated from high school at Salem Academy in Winston-Salem in 1942. She attended Duke University from 1942-1944 and then graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, in 1946.
She married Donald M. Bernard, Jr. in 1946. Over sixty-seven years of marriage, they resided in Louisiana, Washington (state), New Jersey, Texas, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and North Carolina. Betsy maintained friendships with people from every place they lived.
Betsy and Don have three children: daughter Martha B. Scherer of Vienna, Austria, daughter Carol B. Snyder of Southport, North Carolina, and son Donald M. Bernard III of Houston Texas. They have nine grandchildren.
Betsy and Don retired to the Forest at Duke in Durham in 1996. Don died in October 2013.
Betsy was active in the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters. She read non-fiction and followed politics and world news. She enjoyed many sports, especially golf.
She is survived by her brother, Luther H. Hodges, Jr., of Blowing Rock, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Hodges Finlay, of Ireland.
A private graveside service will be held at Overlook Cemetery in Eden, North Carolina at a future date.
The family thanks the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Health and Wellness Center at the Forest at Duke for their loving care of Betsy over the last year.
