Charles Louis Milone of Chapel Hill and more recently, Durham, NC passed away early Saturday morning, June 20, 2015.
Charles was born in Olney, IL on January 19, 1920 and lived there until he attended Eastern Illinois University where he received his undergraduate degree and later Northwestern University where he received his DDS.
He moved to Chapel Hill where he taught at the Dental School at UNC until his retirement. He was a co-author of Marketing for the Dental Practice which was used for many years as a text book at the Dental School. He served with distinction in the Marine Corps during World War II as a bomber pilot in the Pacific theatre earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with three gold stars. He loved flying and his comrades in the Corps, faithfully attending squadron reunions for many years. Charles and his wife, Barbara Bounds Milone were active and devoted members of Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Durham where they developed many friendships.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ray Milone and Nellie Streich Milone, his sisters, Eloise and Lucille, and his wife of 42 years, Barbara Namias Bounds Milone. Charles’ former wife, Bobbi Caldwell continues to live in Florida, but came to Chapel Hill after Barbara’s death to assist him in his declining health, an act of kindness for which his family is extremely grateful.
Charles is survived by his son, John Edward Milone, his step daughter, Bobbi Bounds Embree and step son Michael Frederick Bounds; his grandchildren, Melanie Milone Bass, John Luther Milone, and Kirstin Ann Milone, his step grandchild Gwendolyn Michelle Bounds and his great grandchildren, Sterling Bass, Mallory Bass and Isabella Milone and his step great grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Wilson and Michael Wayne Wilson, Jr.
Charles derived great enjoyment from his travels all over the world with Barbara visiting dozens of countries in all corners of the earth. He was a thoughtful, intelligent man, generous to charitable organizations and to those less fortunate than himself.
A memorial service will be held at Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4907 Garrett Road, Durham, NC 27707 on August 8, 2015 at 2:00 o’clock PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made, in Charles’ name, to Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
